On July 19th, K-pop group (G)I-DLE ignited controversy with their stage outfits during their performance of “Klaxon” on KBS 2TV’s Music Bank. The group’s attire, which featured a prominent red cross, has drawn intense backlash and allegations of violating Korean law.
The Korean Red Cross raised objections to (G)I-DLE’s use of lifeguard outfits adorned with the red cross emblem. According to Article 25 of the Korean Red Cross Organization Act, the emblem cannot be used without prior approval from the Red Cross. Unauthorized use for promotional or commercial purposes is subject to fines of up to 10 million won (approx $7,232.96 USD).
In a statement, the Korean Red Cross noted that it appeared the use of the emblem by (G)I-DLE was unintentional and not habitual. “It seems they used it without being fully aware of the implications,” the Red Cross stated. “As this does not appear to be a deliberate act, we do not plan on pursuing additional fines or penalties at this time. However, we have reached out to the agency to discuss measures to prevent future occurrences.“
In response to the situation, Cube Entertainment, the agency representing (G)I-DLE, issued an official statement addressing the issue.
We acknowledge the concerns regarding the stage costumes worn by (G)I-DLE during their performance of ‘Klaxon’ on Music Bank.
We have contacted the Korean Red Cross to apologize and are actively engaged in discussions to address the matter and prevent a recurrence,” the statement read. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and express our gratitude to our fans for their continued support and interest in (G)I-DLE.
